Evan Bates

(Acoustic and Electric)
Evan Bates began playing music at an early age, learning the cello at the Vancouver Academy of Music. After several years playing the cello, he joined the Delta Youth Orchestra at the age of 8. During his time with them, Evan started playing the double bass and it quickly became his principal instrument. He has studied bass with Sidney Keats and David Brown from the VSO. His musical education continued at the University of Victoria where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree. While at UVic he studied with Mary Rannie, principal bass of the Victoria Symphony, and received master classes from Gary Karr. Evan has won several awards and scholarships for both cello and double bass and performed with many classical ensembles and orchestras around the lower mainland including The Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra, The New Westminster Symphony Orchestra, The Richmond Orchestra, The Vancouver Island Symphony and the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
In addition to his classical experience, Evan also plays with several local bands in a wide range of musical genres, from rock to roots, and from jazz to world music. He performs regularly with his Afro-Funk group, Jarimba and tours extensively with spoken word artist C.R. Avery, as well as other projects. His proficiency in a broad range of musical styles has allowed him to play all across North America and Europe. Evan is also a session musician in his hometown of Vancouver and has appeared on many popular Canadian artist's recordings.
Evan has been teaching cello, double bass and electric bass students privately since 2002 in Victoria and the lower mainland to all ages and abilities.
