He was awarded the CBC Radio Rising Star Award at Musicfest Canada 2007 and won Second Place in Canadian National Competitions 2008. Paul is also the winner of Performing Arts BC for two years. He is a member of the YouTube Symphony 2011. His most recent achievement is advancing to the semi-final round of Myrna Brown Flute competition which will take place in Dallas, Texas in May.
Paul has participated in numerous music festivals, such as the Banff Arts Center, and Domaine Forget, as well as Musicfest Canada and Pender Island flute retreat where he studied with Lorna McGhee and the international renowned flutist William Bennett. Paul has been the Principal Flutist of the UBC Symphonic Wind Ensemble, UBC Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, LFAS Youth Symphony, New Westminster Symphony, and Vancouver Academy Orchestra. He is also actively involved in music recitals and ensembles such as the Tempest flute ensemble here in Vancouver.
Paul currently studies with Lorna McGhee. He has also studied under Brenda Fedoruk (Vancouver Opera Orchestra), Christie Reside (Vancouver Symphony Orchestra), and Caroline Janos (LCMS/LFAS).
Paul believes that flute playing is simple if the student understands how the body works in relation to the instrument. The fundamentals of flute playing are, in fact, the realization of effortless playing; if the student can learn to play with ease, they can then fully enjoy the sound and experience of music that is produced from their mind and body through the instrument. By teaching this fundamental aspect of the simplicity of flute playing, students are given the opportunity to further develop their understanding of the beauty of sound and phrasing.
