Paul Keeling
Paul Keeling grew up in San Diego, California and was the youngest of five children in a musically gifted family. He grew up hearing live classical chamber music played by his siblings and rehearsals of the UCSD Madrigal Singers (directed by his father) in the living room. He began classical piano lessons in Los Angeles with Robert Turner at an early age and was a chorister in the acclaimed St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir of San Diego from the age of 7 to 18. In his teens he became interested in jazz music and studied jazz piano with Bob Holtz and Susan Muscarella, eventually becoming a regular player on the jazz scene in San Diego in the 1990’s. Paul moved to Vancouver in 2006, where he performs and records with his own quintet (www.paulkeeling.net). Over the last 18 years he has taught many courses in jazz improvisation, jazz music theory and jazz appreciation for adult Continuing Studies programs in California, the U.K. and Canada, and has directed jazz ensembles at the high school level.
