Angela Birney
Pianist Angela Birney was born and raised in southwestern Ontario. One day, on a whim, her father brought home a piano and she was hooked. Piano lessons followed which soon included theory lessons, Kiwanis festivals and Royal Conservatory exams. In high school, Angela also played flute, trumpet, organ and was the accompanist for high school musical productions. Angela completed a Bachelor of Music Degree (Honours) in Piano from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo where she studied with Ralph Elsaesser. During her Laurier days, Angela played harpsichord with the WLU Baroque Ensemble, sang in the University Choir, accompanied both instrumentalists and vocalists and conducting studies with the WLU Orchestra.
She moved west and completed a Master of Music degree in Conducting from the University of Calgary where she worked with the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble under the direction of Glenn Price. Angela has also conducted the University of Calgary Symphonic Band and the Calgary Civic Orchestra. Angela has studied with such esteemed conducting pedagogues as Robert Culver, Marvin Rabin, Harlan Parker and Harold Farbermann.
Angela moved west again, to British Columbia, where she and her husband, also a freelance musician, have settled on the North Shore and have busy teaching and performing schedules. When not teaching piano or theory, she is also an accompanist and coach. Angela also plays viola with the North Shore Chamber Orchestra.
Angela enjoys teaching students of any age and any musical preference. She has extensive teaching experience with Royal Conservatory exams in both piano and theory.
