Meredith Bates

Vancouver-born violinist Meredith Bates received her early musical training at the Vancouver Academy of Music before moving to Halifax, Nova Scotia to study on scholarship with Philippe Djokic at Dalhousie University. She graduated with distinction from Dalhousie in 2004, earning her Bachelor of Music degree. Additional teachers include Jenny Scheinman, Isabelle Fournier, Wallace Leung, Angela Cavados, and Lorraine Grescoe. In the Spring of 2009, Meredith added to her credentials by receiving a full scholarship to attend the Banff Centre for Fine Arts Jazz and Creative Music Workshop.
Meredith has performed and taught extensively over the past thirteen years in both Vancouver and Halifax. At Dalhousie, Meredith was awarded several scholarships from the Music Department, sat concertmaster with the Dalhousie Symphony Orchestra, and performed concertos with several orchestras in the community. She also performed and recorded with hip-hop artist Buck 65, contemporary music ensemble The Upstream Orchestra, and roots/rock bands Matt Mayes and El Torpedo, The Heavy Blinkers, The Guthries, Gabriel and Ruth Minnikin, and Tyler Mesick and The Museum Pieces.
Meredith now finds herself one of the busiest violinists in Vancouver and currently plays with Vancouver-based 2010 Galaxie Rising Star Award winners The Pugs and Crows Band and Very Good as well as 2010 Juno nominees, Yukon-based old-time band, Annie Lou. Meredith has also toured and performed extensively with C.R. Avery and the Legal Tender String Quartet, Dyad, Mark Berube, and Shannon Scott, to name a few. Meredith performs with the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra and leads her own classical string quartet geared toward the performance of new music.
