Mathew Davidson
Mathew Davidson has been teaching music for 15 years. He began by studying piano, and took on the violin shortly thereafter, and recently has studied with the violist/violinist Martina Smazal, with whom he also studied violin pedagogy. He continues to study both violin and violin pedagogy, despite his many years of experience teaching, out of the firm belief that there is always more to learn.
After completing his Bachelors degree in music composition at SFU, he spent 4 years studying music theory, orchestration, and world music at UBC. In addition to acquiring a deep understanding of western classical music and tonal theory, this involved the study of other world music traditions, such as Balinese Gamelan, the Chinese fiddle (erhu), and African and Korean drumming. He is currently completing his Masters degree in ethnomusicology at UBC.
Despite the variety of his background in music composition, theory and world music, the violin remains Mathew’s main focus and strongest instrument. He is equally comfortable teaching violin, music theory, or piano skills.
