Music for Children levels I, II

Age groups:
Level I - 2-3yrs, Thursday 1:00 - 1:35pm, $13.00/lesson
Level II - 4-5yrs, Thursday 2:00 - 2:45pm, $13.00/lesson
Level I: 2-3 Years (35 minutes)
Songs and stories with movement and instruments to stimulate the child’s musical imagination
Goals and Activities:
- Explore the musical elements of beat, rhythm, pitch, form, tempo and dynamics through finger plays, action songs, chants, musical games, movement and playing both pitched and non-pitched Orff instruments.
- Introduce reading and performing quarter notes and paired eighth notes through short chants and body movement.
- Encourage singing in pitch through copying and “question and answer” singing games. Kodaly hand signals will be used as a visual aid.
- Encourage a “whole body” response to music through a range of movements.
- Introduce the names and proper use of the Orff instruments and other percussion instruments. Listen to the timbre of different groups of instruments – wood, metal, skin.
- Stimulate musical imagination by acting out stories or characters in song, movement and instrumentation.
- Introduce ensemble playing by sequencing the instruments.
- Encourage creativity and individual expression.
- Provide opportunity for leadership – e.g. a movement or shape copying game, playing the drum for a movement activity.
Level II: 4-5 Years (45 minutes)
Goals and Activities:
- Explore the musical elements of beat, rhythm, pitch, form, tempo, dynamics and timbre through action songs, chants, musical games, movement and playing both pitched and non-pitched Orff instruments.
- Develop beat competency and introduce the concept of beat accent.
- Read and perform quarter notes, paired eighth notes and quarter rests. Create, copy aurally and recognize rhythm patterns using these time values.
- Encourage singing in pitch through copying and “question and answer” singing games. Kodaly hand signals will be used as a visual aid.
- Encourage a “whole body” response to music through a range of movements.
- Name the Orff instruments and play them properly. Listen to the timbre of different groups of instruments – wood, metal, skin.
- Stimulate musical imagination and expression by acting out stories or characters in song, movement and instrumentation.
- Play instruments in ensemble in simple Orff arrangements.
- Encourage creativity and individual expression.
