Tuesday, March 27, 7pm-9pm There is limited capacity for this seminar. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION In this workshop, John Showman will teach fiddle players, whether in old-time, bluegrass or even celtic music, how to get more tone and groove into their playing by going beyond one-note-per-bow bowing. Beginning with a detailed review of proper and relaxed bowing technique, John will then show how to add varied bowing moves, such as shuffling, syncopation, double stops and free-form bowing, to help the player achieve improved feel and groove. BIOGRAPHY As a founding member of New Country Rehab, the Creaking Tree String Quartet and the Foggy Hogtown Boys, John Showman has made his mark as “one of the very best and most influential fiddle players in Canada” (Steve Pritchard, CIUT 89.5 FM). Over a 15-year career spanning 3,000 shows across the continent, John has brought a hard-earned, hard-edged understanding to the music he loves to play. John champions melody and groove above all else. His original style draws from the magic of traditional fiddle: the raw drive of old-time Appalachian music; the fire and attack of bluegrass; the intoxicating swing of Cajun and French-Canadian fiddle tunes; and the haunting beauty of the Irish and Scottish traditions. With the launch of “Showman”, his debut solo album, John puts the listener’s focus on his great love of traditional fiddle music. What sets the album apart from others is the interaction between the supporting cast of musicians, featuring the members of both of his bands and including blues piano master Julian Fauth and mandolinist Joey Wright from the Jen Whiteley band. Every track features a unique and carefully-selected combination of these players, making for a great vibe on record. |

Fred Sokolow will lead two seminars: one for Ukulele and one for Guitar. Monday & Tuesday April 2nd & 3rd, 7-9pm Seminar Cost: $40 each (non-refundable unless the event is cancelled) There is limited capacity for this seminar.
This seminar for uke players is an introduction to the concepts taught in his book "Fretboard Roadmaps for Ukulele". There are visual patterns on the uke fretboard which, when understood, make it easier to play in any key, learn new tunes, navigate all over the fretboard, and generally understand the instrument, instead of just memorizing songs and arrangements. It's very hands on: you'll play along with Fred as he uses songs to illustrate various musical concepts. You'll learn about moveable chords, chord families, how to play single-note solos on the uke, how to recognize and play standard chord progressions (such as the 12-bar blues)...lots of theory, but presented in a practical way, to help you as a player. Whether you're a beginner who only plays the basic first-position chords, or a more advanced player, there will be several light-bulb moments (illuminations!) and you'll take away lots of things to practice. It's all about getting to the next level and understanding how the uke works. You can check out Fred's website at sokolowmusic.com, or go straight to the page that the Fretboard Roadmaps for Uke is on: http://www.sokolowmusic.com/instructional/other You can also see Fred answer Jim D'Ville's "three questions" here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP4BMu15DTk
Fred Sokolow has written over a hundred fifty instruction books and DVDs for guitar, uke, banjo, Dobro and mandolin, and his best-selling "Fretboard Roadmaps for Guitar" has spawned a whole series of books (roadmaps for jazz, blues, country, rock, etc.). This seminar for guitar players is an introduction to the concepts taught in those books. There are visual patterns on the guitar fretboard which, when understood, make it easier to play in any key, learn new tunes, navigate all over the fretboard, and generally understand the instrument, instead of just memorizing songs and arrangements. It's very hands on: you'll play along with Fred as he uses songs to illustrate various musical concepts. You'll learn about moveable chords, chord families, several soloing strategies, how to recognize and play standard chord progressions...lots of theory, but presented in a practical way, to help you as a player. Whether you're a beginner who only plays the basic first-position chords, or a more advanced player, there will be several light-bulb moments (illuminations!) and you'll take away lots of things to practice. It's all about getting to the next level and understanding how the guitar works. You can check out Fred's website at sokolowmusic.com, or see some of the many instructional clips from his DVDs on youtube. BIOGRAPHY Fred Sokolow has been a prominent West Coast musician for decades. Although he's seen most often playing jazz guitar and singing in L.A. nightspots, he's just as likely to turn up playing 5-string banjo at bluegrass festivals or rock guitar at studio sessions. You may even spot him playing Dobro or mandolin on folk revivals for cable and public television. He has contributed to numerous movie and TV show soundtracks and commercials, and has been a sideman for many prominent artists (Bobbie Gentry, Tom Paxton, Jim Stafford, The Limeliters, Ian Whitcomb, Jody Stecher), always armed with an arsenal of stringed instruments. Fred also appears at music camps like the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop and Steve Kaufman's Akoustic Music Kamp, and he conducts musical workshops, often based on his best-selling Fretboard Roadmaps for Ukulele and Fretboard Roadmaps for Guitar Books. |
